Although number one reason for developing gum disease is poor oral hygiene, diseases of the gums can be hereditary or due to lifestyle choices such as smoking. Gum disease is very common, and it can lead to other health issues. Left without treatment, people with gum disease will eventually experience tooth loss.

Number one cause of tooth loss is gum disease. The good news is that caught early, it can be treated and it is reversible. But unfortunately, the bad news is that most people don’t know they have it until it has already gotten to the bone and there is bone loss. Even at this stage, most people don’t know they have gum disease or gum infection because there is not pain. The only way to know you have gum disease and catch it early is by visiting your dentist regularly.

Treatment of gum disease is not too complicated especially if caught early. Usually a deep cleaning will take care of it, but if it’s at a stage where there is bone loss, other treatments like localized antibiotics is necessary. If there is more bone loss, then surgery is recommended. So don’t wait until you need more extensive and more expensive treatments, and definitely don’t wait till it’s too late and you end up loosing your teeth!
